HPDE Flag Guide

HPDE Track Flag Guide: What Every New Driver Needs to Know

At any HPDE event, corner workers use flags to communicate with drivers. Learning these is essential—miss one, and you could cause a dangerous situation or get black-flagged off track.

Here’s your quick-reference guide to the most common HPDE flags:

🟡 Yellow Flag – Caution

Standing: Used for the first lap of a session.  If during a session, it means there’s an issue ahead (like a disabled car). No passing allowed until you pass the next corner station showing a green flag.
Waving: More serious issue—potentially on track or near the racing line. Slow down more aggressively and be alert.

Think: “Something’s wrong ahead. Be alert.”

🟢 Green Flag – Session is Hot / All Clear

The track is clear, and the session is live. This flag is typically shown at the start/finish and after a yellow to indicate the end of a caution zone.

Think: “Game on.”

⚠️ Blue with Yellow Stripe – Point-By Requested

You’re being approached by a faster car. Check your mirrors. If it’s safe, give a point-by and let them pass in the designated zone.

Think: “Let them by, lift. It’s not a race.”

🔴 Red Flag – STOP Immediately

Pull safely and quickly to the side of the track—off the racing line—and come to a complete stop. This indicates a serious incident or emergency.

Think: “Full stop. Wait for instructions.”

⚫ Black Flag – Return to Pit Lane

This is directed at you. Something may be wrong with your car or behavior. Proceed safely to the pits and speak to a steward or instructor.

Think: “Control needs to talk with me—now.”

Black Flag (All Stations): Everyone return to pits. The session is likely paused or ending early.

🔴⚫ Black Flag with Orange Dot (“Meatball”) – Mechanical Issue

There’s something wrong with your car (e.g., leaking fluid, smoke, loose bodywork). Return to the pits immediately and safely.

Think: “Your car has a problem. Time to pit.”

⚪ White Flag – Slow-Moving Vehicle Ahead

Usually shown when there’s an emergency or track support vehicle on track. Approach with caution.

Think: “Slow car ahead. Eyes up.”

🏁 Checkered Flag – Session End

Your session is over. Finish the lap at moderate pace, cool down, and return to the paddock. No passing allowed after this flag.

Think: “Cool down lap—bring it in.”

Tips for Flag Awareness:

  • Scan every corner station on each lap—don’t rely on others.
  • Know your flag locations during the morning meeting.
  • If you miss a flag or aren’t sure—assume caution and communicate with your instructor.
  • Respect the system. HPDE isn’t just about speed—it’s about control, safety, and discipline.
